I really like NotebookLM, especially for dumping PDFs/slides/long YouTube videos into one place and asking questions about them. But I’m starting to feel like it’s very “research workspace” first, which makes sense. It’s great when I already have sources and I want to understand them. Less great when I want something more flexible for actual learning, especially on mobile. The things I’m looking for: - handles PDFs, slides, articles, and long You Tube videos - lets me chat with the material / summarize / ask follow-up questions - has more output styles than just one default format - ideally lets me change voice, tone, length, and depth - works well on mobile - can translate or help me learn across languages - good for topics beyond school research, like communication, social skills, history, humanities,career stuff, etc. - bonus if it helps plan what to learn next instead of just summarizing one source A few I’ve looked at so far: Quizzify seems good if your main use case is active recall. It’s more of a quiz/practice-test focused, which is useful because summaries can trick you into thinking you learned something. My brain absolutely falls for this. The downside is that it feels more school/study-tool specific. BeFreed for the audio learning side. It’s not really a NotebookLM clone, but that’s kind of why I like it. You can paste a PDF, article, You Tube link, or just prompt a topic, then it turns it into a personalized audio learning path. You can adjust the voice, style, depth, and length, and the mobile experience is much better for learning while walking/commuting. I’ve used it more for history, communication, social skills, and career-type topics than pure school research. Elephas looks interesting for Mac users because it can do document Q&A and writing locally. That might be helpful if connection issues are the annoying part. But from what I can tell, it’s more of a doc chat / writing assistant than a flexible learning app. Gamma / Canva / Napkin seem stronger if the goal is visual output. Like if you want something presentation-ish, they’re probably closer than most study apps. But they don’t really feel like they’re planning a learning path for you, more like helping you make an output look decent. Still using Anki for stuff I actually need to memorize. Annoying but effective. Saving is not learning, unfortunately. Curious what people here are using. omaha NE. 11 years residential real estate. running my own team within a brokerage for 2 years. 6 agents including me. combined volume last year ~$42M. ~$1.1M team GCI. for the first 2 years running this team, my quarterly forecasts were wildly inaccurate. q1 i would forecast $280k team GCI and we would close at $190k. q2 i would forecast $310k and we would close at $410k. variance was always 30-40% one direction or the other. i could not figure out why. i was using market data, our pipeline, recent comps, and intuition. nothing was working. in september i started using claude to help with the forecast. what i did differently. step 1: built an ai quarterly forecast deck (Gamma) with claude. structured around 6 inputs i had not been tracking together: current active listings, current pending sales by stage, my agents' weighted pipeline, recent local comp activity, mortgage rate environment, seasonal historical patterns. step 2: claude pulled patterns from my own 2 years of bad forecasts. asked me what had been different in the months where i over-forecast vs under-forecast. surfaced that i had been consistently overweighting "hot" pipeline conversations from my agents and consistently underweighting the seasonal patterns. step 3: claude built a forecast model that weighted the 6 inputs based on what had actually predicted closings in my historical data. the weights surprised me. agent-reported pipeline confidence was much less predictive than days-on-market in the local comps. i had been listening to my agents more than to the market. what changed. q4 forecast: $320k. actual: $311k. ~3% variance. this was the most accurate forecast i had ever shipped. not because my judgment got better. because i stopped weighting the wrong inputs. q1 2026 forecast (in progress): $340k. we are 6 weeks in tracking close to that. what i learned about non-tech founder use of claude. most non-tech founders i know use claude for writing (drafting emails, drafting content). that is fine but it is using ~10% of what claude can do. claude is best at finding patterns in your own decisions and data. specifically the decisions you have been making poorly. it does not have ego. it will tell you that you have been overweighting an input that does not predict outcomes. a human consultant might soften that feedback. claude does not. i was scared to ask claude "what have i been getting wrong" for ~6 months because i did not want the answer. when i finally asked, it told me. fixing the answer has been worth ~$100k of revenue accuracy this quarter alone. for other non-tech founders. ask claude what you have been getting wrong about your business. paste in your historical decisions and outcomes. let it find the pattern. then fix the pattern. uncomfortable. extremely valuable. submitted by /u/Temporary-Prior7384 [link] [comments]

Something I started a little while ago. I've been using Claude chat and Claude code to reverse engineer the firmware transfer function of the RadiaCode 110 gamma spectrometer. Basically the lens (the firmware transfer function) I have to look through to see the actual physics occurring in the scintillator crystal. Once I have the firmware behavior I can then "see" what the scintlator crystal is doing without the layers the radiacode adds before surfacing data to the user. So far we've empirically pulled out the "event" firmware transfer function, the formula the company uses to smooth the gamma counts per second, from reading the firmware's counts per second output by placing it into a lead lined bucket that turned the radiacode into a preferential muon detector. The lead castle blocks out the terrestrial radiation but allows the cosmic muons to still pass through. Allowing me to use cosmic radiation and terrestrial radon events to probe the firmware behavior. Today we are moving on to controlled radiation probing, where I place different radioactive materials at different distances from the device. An Americum button from a commercial smoke detector, a thoriated projector lens, and a sample of lutetium 176.This testing will significantly close the gap in the firmware functions we are after. It's just kind of funny to me that six weeks ago I started with Claude chat asking about the radiacode gamma spectrometer and here I am running controlled radiation tests on it to probe its firmware responses. The last time I did any programming was back in the early 90s and that was Pascal and Fortran. Having Claude chat work with Claude code, through analysis/build handoffs is something I could never program on my own. Claude chat is like having my own research assistant and Claude code is like my software engineer. K Means is basically an RBF network I have been working on a formulation of K Means as a continuous optimization problem instead of a discrete algorithm. The idea is to replace hard assignments with soft responsibilities and define a smooth objective that preserves the clustering structure while making the system fully differentiable and trainable end to end. The main result is a Gamma convergence analysis showing that this objective recovers standard K Means in the zero temperature limit. So the usual alternating updates are not fundamental, they emerge from a continuous variational problem when the smoothing vanishes. This also gives a precise connection with Radial Basis Function networks. Under this formulation, centers, assignments, and loss are part of the same objective, and the difference between clustering and a neural model is just the level of smoothness. One thing I find interesting is that this removes the need to treat clustering as a separate block. In principle it can be embedded directly inside larger models and optimized jointly, although it is not obvious how stable or useful that is in practice. I would be interested in critical feedback on both sides. On the theory side, whether the variational argument is actually tight or missing edge cases.
